Fluctuations in styrene prices are causing greater volatility in resin prices \/ Glass fiber imports are being affected by rising freight costs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

With a styrene contract set at a significantly lower level (-270 EUR\/t in July) and demand remaining low, resin prices declined overall. The KI panel reported changes ranging from rollovers to discounts of 70 EUR\/t. Little is expected to change regarding the low demand in August\u2014but this does not apply to styrene costs, which are set to rise noticeably. Polymer prices are therefore expected to rise in the coming weeks. The glass fiber market was marked by higher freight costs for shipments from Asia. However, weak demand generally kept price increases in check. The exception was higher-grade fiber mats, where the dominant quarterly contracts kept prices largely stable. In August, sellers will once again push to pass on logistics costs. This is likely to succeed to a large extent and lead to further price increases. <\/p>\n\n

Right at the start of the month, the existing demands for resin price increases were off the table once again. In isolated cases, low prices were raised slightly, but overall, processors managed to maintain current prices due to low demand and the first signs of the summer lull. <\/p>\n\n

PIE\u2019s advisory panel is divided over expectations for price trends in the coming weeks. One faction anticipates a further rollover, while the other foresees noticeable price reductions of between EUR 100\/t and EUR 200\/t. The latter view is based on the belief that demand will continue to decline and that styrene costs will fall significantly. The July contract for the precursor was settled at EUR 270\/t lower. Prices for glass fiber products\u2014which have mostly remained stable recently\u2014could rise in July despite weak demand. This is due to rising freight costs, which not all importers have factored in yet. In addition, a European glass fiber producer recently announced production problems, which could also affect availability. <\/p>\n\n
