Natural fiber-reinforced plastics (NFK) have been successfully used in mass production since the 1990s and have established themselves as a sustainable lightweight construction solution, particularly in the automotive industry. The materials used primarily include natural fibers such as flax, hemp, kenaf, jute, and sisal, which, when combined with polymer matrix materials, form high-performance composites. Due to their low weight, good mechanical properties, and positive carbon footprint, natural fiber-reinforced plastics are particularly suitable for interior trim, door modules, rear shelf panels, and, in some cases, structural components. They thus make an important contribution to resource conservation, weight reduction, and more sustainable mobility.
In our working group, experts meet regularly to exchange views on market developments, discuss current research findings, and explore potential future applications. Marketing is also a key aspect of our work. The goal here is to raise awareness of existing solutions. To foster the best possible collaboration within the composites community and beyond, we also hold meetings in cooperation with partners.
