GKV welcomes the draft of the National Circular Economy Strategy

General Association of the Plastics Processing Industry (GKV)

The development of the National Circular Economy Strategy (NKWS) took several months.
This was preceded by a consultation and dialog process involving many stakeholders and led by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
The GKV welcomes the fact that the BMUV is working with the NKWS to develop innovative concepts for the circular economy.
with plastics from the dialog process. “The National Circular Economy Strategy
recognizes the great social benefits of plastics and the need for further efforts towards a circular economy with plastics. At the same time, the draft strategy provides transparency about the Federal Government’s political plans for realizing the
circular economy with plastics,” says GKV Managing Director Dr. Oliver Möllenstädt.
The Association of the Plastics Processing Industry is particularly positive about the fact that the German government intends to advocate the introduction of polymer-specific substitution quotas at European Union level as a useful addition to product-related recyclate usage quotas. The association also supports the German government’s intention to examine the introduction of a certificate trading system at EU level. This would allow companies that exceed their targets for the use of recycled materials to sell certificates to companies for which the switch to secondary materials is associated with higher costs. In this way, recycled material usage quotas can be achieved efficiently. “The proposals of the National Circular Economy Strategy help to overcome existing hurdles to transformation. Germany can thus once again become the driving force behind the circular economy for plastics at EU level,” comments
Dr. Isabell Schmidt, Managing Director of Circular Economy at the IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, supporting association of the GKV.
