How are companies already integrating sustainability?

Saxon Textile Research Institute e.V. (STFI)

The interdisciplinary project team of the joint project “NIBTEX – Nachhaltig im Beruf: Etablierung von Qualifizierungsmaßnahmen für das Lehr- und ausbildende Personal in der Textilindustrie” is starting to implement its concept. The partners involved, the Professorships of Adult and Continuing Education and Business Environmental Economics and Sustainability at Chemnitz University of Technology, the STFI and a team of trainers from the local textile industry are planning and developing measures to integrate the holistic concept of sustainability into training and continuing education programs in the textile industry. To this end, the project team is conducting a survey of SMEs on the topic of sustainability.

With the help of the initial survey, the interdisciplinary team within the NIBTEX project will develop needs-based teaching and learning formats that strengthen the skills profile of trainers and managers. The aim of the survey is to gain a broad database for the current status in terms of sustainability and to identify the needs of the textile industry. The survey will take 15 minutes to complete and will run until October 31, 2024.

About the project partners and their tasks in the project

In its role as network coordinator, the STFI is responsible for the overall management of the project. Due to its central position as an established research institution in the textile industry, it is responsible for networking with companies and stakeholders in the textile sector. The STFI Academy offers qualification and further training modules for employees in the textile industry. The STFI is analyzing and revising the academy’s existing teaching modules. In addition, the institute will initiate activities to retrieve missing knowledge in exchange with companies in other European countries. The Academy’s lecturers are qualified in “train-the-trainer” measures and pass on their knowledge to training personnel in the industry.
The Chair of Corporate Environmental Economics and Sustainability is working with the partners to develop a criteria-based, industry-specific concept for vocational training for sustainable development (BBNE) and supports the analysis of the Academy’s existing teaching modules. The professorship participates in the implementation of expert workshops and the formulation of an industry-specific BBNE-TEX competence catalog. It develops content proposals for the creation of the industry-specific BBNE-TEX basic module and, in the subsequent phase, participates in the “train-the-trainer” measures for the lecturers of the STFI Academy as well as in the evaluation of the training of company training personnel.
The Chair of Adult Education and Continuing Education provides adult education support in the project. It is involved in the development of the sector-specific BBNE concept, the analysis of existing teaching modules and program texts with regard to didactic aspects and taking into account possible connections to existing concepts in other sectors. The professorship qualifies the Academy’s lecturers in the design of sustainability-oriented teaching and learning arrangements as well as providing methodological and didactic advice in in-company training. The lecturers at the STFI Academy are then further supported through observations in their courses and through surveys.
