Additive manufacturing of composites is still a relatively new field, but it has received significant attention in recent years. Since around the early 2010s, the first applications in the composites sector have emerged, evolving from general 3D printing technology (which dates back to the 1980s). In additive manufacturing (3D printing), components are built up layer by layer directly from digital models. Particularly in the field of fiber-reinforced plastics, additive manufacturing enables a high degree of design freedom, functionally integrated lightweight structures, and cost-effective production of individual or small batches. As a result, it opens up new potential for resource-efficient and high-performance applications in mobility, aviation, and mechanical engineering.
Our working group meetings are held in cooperation with the DGM —the German Society for Materials Science. This creates opportunities for a broad-based exchange, even beyond the traditional fields of application for composites, and facilitates optimal collaboration both within and outside the composites industry.
