Fiber-reinforced plastics have been used successfully in the automotive sector for many years. The use of thermoplastic composites in particular is increasing significantly. For some years now, the material group of continuous fiber-reinforced plastics (organo sheets and tapes) with their outstanding material properties has come into particular focus.
Their combination of high lightweight construction potential, high mechanical properties, good crash performance and the possibility of functional integration as well as weldability and recyclability make them a promising material for new vehicle concepts and highly stressed structures.
What has been lacking to date, however, are uniform testing and standardization criteria. However, these norms and standards and the test results obtained are a basic prerequisite for widespread use in the automotive sector. This is where the work of our working group on “Continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic semi-finished products” comes in. The work within our committee has now been transferred to an independent project with permanent partners who are developing the relevant principles in close cooperation with important OEMs. The aim is to create a standardized test catalog and to transfer the corresponding characteristic values to the common material databases so that composites are perceived as a real alternative by decision-makers.
The potential of continuous fiber-reinforced plastics in the automotive sector is huge. Together with our experts, we are working on the technological foundations for transferring our knowledge into relevant material databases.
