Decline in sales in the plastics processing industry continues in 2024 – trend reversal could come in 2025

General Association of the Plastics Processing Industry (GKV)

At its annual economic press conference on Ash Wednesday, the Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitende Industrie e.V. (GKV) drew a mixed picture of the industry’s economic situation, as in the previous year.

Following declines in 2023, the downward trend in the plastics processing industry continued in 2024. The industry’s turnover fell from 72.5 billion euros to 69.4 billion euros. The number of employees fell from more than 319,000 to only around 313,000. GKV President Dr. Helen Fürst sees an opportunity for an end to the downturn in 2025. “Our industry has the potential for growth. The proverbial silver lining on the horizon is gradually becoming visible after two challenging years for the plastics processing industry,” said Fürst in Frankfurt am Main. From the point of view of the companies in the plastics processing industry, however, the prerequisites for an upswing are, in particular, relieving the industry of high energy costs and a consistent reduction in bureaucracy. The industry is hoping for further momentum from the world’s leading trade fair for the plastics industry, K 2025, which will take place in Düsseldorf from October 8 to 15, 2025.
