NEW SEMINAR: “Bio-composites – sustainable fiber composites”

In the production of biocomposites, a matrix material (plastic) is processed with fibers as a reinforcing material, whereby at least one component must be obtained from a renewable resource by definition. This results in new sustainable materials that have exceptional mechanical properties and can be used in lightweight construction. Fibers made from flax, hemp or jute are often used as reinforcing fibers, which are increasingly competing with the predominant synthetic fibers due to their high specific properties. The thermoplastic or thermoset matrix systems can also be partially or predominantly bio-based.

Basically, bio-based fiber composites can be processed using conventional manufacturing processes. However, there are still challenges to fully exploiting the potential of this class of fiber composites. Bio-composites are currently used in the automotive industry in particular, for example for interior fittings or body parts. However, bio-based composites have also established themselves in the sporting goods industry or as a material for furniture.
