Working Group | Hydrogen Pressure Tanks

Fiber-reinforced plastic pressure vessels have long been used for the safe storage of gases and are becoming increasingly important, particularly in the field of hydrogen technology. Thanks to the use of high-strength carbon and glass fibers, composite pressure tanks combine low weight, high pressure resistance, and maximum safety. Today, they are used in fuel cell vehicles, commercial vehicles, buses, rail vehicles, and stationary hydrogen storage systems, among other applications. In this way, composite pressure vessels make a decisive contribution to the development of a high-performance hydrogen infrastructure and to a sustainable energy and mobility transition. Without fiber-reinforced pressure vessels, many mobile hydrogen applications would be virtually impossible to implement in their current form.

The AVK working group focuses on professional exchange. Various guest speakers provide information on current research findings, developments, and potential applications. To ensure the widest possible reach for this important topic, the group also collaborates closely with partners in this area. For example, the most recent working group meeting took place in cooperation with the Composites United/CU-AG “Lightweight Construction for Hydrogen Systems” at the Leibniz Institute for Composite Materials GmbH (IVW). Further exchanges are planned both within the AVK network and beyond. The working group’s goal is to expand the market potential for hydrogen pressure tanks made of composites by bringing together all participating companies and developing common goals and actions.
