Working Group | Structural Analysis – Seismic Design and Pipe Connection Loads

The Working Group on Structural Analysis—Seismic Design and Connection Loads was established as a sub-working group of the “FRP in Pipe, Tank, and Plant Construction” working group. However, it operates completely independently. The working group is currently working on the topic of nozzle loads on plastic tanks and equipment.

The calculation of nozzle loads is used to verify that the forces and moments transmitted into a vessel or piece of equipment via connected piping can be safely absorbed. Without a calculation, design, and corresponding verification tailored to composites, unacceptably high stresses, delamination, or cracking may occur in the area of the nozzles. Given the frequent requirement for seismic safety, proper design takes on even greater importance. During an earthquake, vessels, foundations, and piping systems move dynamically. This generates additional forces and bending moments at the pipe connections, which often significantly exceed the loads encountered during normal operation. These dynamic loads can lead to critical stresses on the nozzles and their reinforcements, particularly in large vessels or equipment.

The working group has already prepared and published guidelines and documents on the design of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tanks for seismic loading. The experts are currently working on various topics (such as stress analysis, optimal tightening torques, and the design of flange connections) and are making the corresponding technical working documents available.
