AZL launches joint partner project on thermoplastic pressure vessel production

AZL Aachen GmbH

With its latest Joint Partner Project “Thermoplastic Pressure Vessel Production – Benchmarking of Design-for-Manufacturing Strategies to Optimize Material Efficiency and Cost”, AZL Aachen GmbH invites companies from the entire value chain of pressure vessels and composite materials to work together on the next level of sustainable high-pressure storage solutions.

Realizing the full potential of thermoplastic composites
Thermoplastic composites are known for their potential to shorten processing times, offer alternative recycling routes and improve design flexibility. However, when conventional thermoset container designs are merely transferred to thermoplastic manufacturing, cost and efficiency often fall short of competitiveness. The aim of this project is to rethink the design and production of containers holistically and to align the properties of thermoplastic materials with optimized design and manufacturing strategies to unlock their full economic and technological potential.

Collaborative development for scalable solutions
The Joint Partner Project (JPP) initiative brings together companies with common interests to co-fund and shape the project. The AZL engineering team will analyze current technologies, develop new design concepts for hydrogen and CNG containers and evaluate the resulting configurations in terms of weight, cost, recyclability and production KPIs. The consortium of participating companies will have access to simulation results, concept designs and comparative assessments based on a common framework.

Experience and exchange are firmly integrated
The JPP format not only offers a platform for technical development, but also for strategic networking. Each partner can contribute, benefit from consolidated expertise and gain early access to the results. With more than a decade of experience in implementing such initiatives, AZL ensures structured and results-oriented collaboration. The project will start on July 16, 2025. All participants are invited to take part in an interactive kick-off meeting to define key priorities and present their perspectives. Further project information and individual consultation appointments are available now.
