SCA 592 for the VW ID. Buzz | Lightweight GRP roof frame | Weight and height-optimized: SCA 324 and SCA 326 | Green natural fibre roof shell
SCA, a brand of the C.F. Maier Group, is presenting four technological innovations that rethink the weight, height and use of materials for pop-up roofs. These include a particularly flat pop-up roof for the VW ID. Buzz, a specially developed lightweight GRP roof frame, a revised version of the SCA 324 with reduced overall height and weight for the Ford Transit, Tourneo Custom and the identical new VW Transporter (T8) as well as a green, bio-based and lightweight roof shell made from natural fibers. The aim of the innovation offensive is to make SCA pop-up roofs even more suitable for everyday use, more efficient and more sustainable in the future – for the benefit of end customers, conversion partners and OEMs.
Flatter: The SCA 592 for the VW ID. Buzz
With the SCA 592, SCA announces a new pop-top roof for the all-electric VW ID. Buzz. It enables an overall height of the vehicle of less than two meters – an important factor for the use of garages and multi-storey parking lots. The factory panoramic roof cut-out of the vehicle is used for the roof structure. This means that the structure of the vehicle remains untouched and the function of safety-relevant systems such as airbags and air conditioning is fully retained. The reclining unit offers a width of around 1.20 meters. In the standard version, the roof will weigh a maximum of 100 kilograms. It will also be available with an optional electric installation. The market launch is planned for the second quarter of 2026.
Lighter: GRP roof frame with significant weight advantage
Another new development concerns the roof frame: In future, SCA will rely on an in-house manufactured frame construction made of unidirectional, glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP), which achieves particularly high mechanical values by aligning the fibers in only one direction, initially for selected models. Compared to the previous steel frame construction, the weight is reduced by around 25 kilograms and therefore by almost 50 percent. The structural stability remains unaffected. Thanks to the lighter frame, customers benefit from a lower center of gravity, a higher total payload as well as reduced fuel and energy consumption and a correspondingly increased range.
Flatter and lighter: new editions of the SCA 324 and SCA 326
SCA is currently developing updated versions of the tried-and-tested SCA 324 (short wheelbase) and SCA 326 (long wheelbase) pop-up roofs for the Ford Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom and the new VW Transporter of the same design – although the previous versions will remain available. In future, both roofs will be equipped with the new GRP lightweight frame. The variant for the short wheelbase will also be comprehensively revised and will not only be given a new design under the name SCA 524, but also a specially developed reclining device. This makes it possible to lower the vehicle height of the basic version with pop-up roof to less than two meters – without modifications to the chassis or tyres and with the interior height remaining unchanged when closed. The market launch of the new variants is planned in stages: The SCA 326 with GRP lightweight frame should be available from the first quarter of 2026, the lighter SCA 324 and the flatter SCA 524 variant in the second quarter of 2026.
More sustainable and lighter: new roof shell made from natural fibers
In the area of materials, SCA is working on a new, bio-based roof shell based on natural fibers from European production. The aim is to gradually replace the use of glass fibers in fiber-reinforced plastics with sustainable components. The new technology enables a weight reduction of 25 to 30 percent and improves the CO₂ balance by up to 40 percent. The material is also styrene-free, robust, weather-resistant and offers good acoustic and thermal damping properties. The launch is scheduled for mid-2026. Application to all common SCA roof types is planned in the long term.
Focus on the future
“With our current developments, we are consistently thinking ahead with pop-up roofs – in the direction of suitability for everyday use, lightweight construction and sustainability,” says Ursula Lindl, Managing Director and responsible for sales at SCA. “As part of the C.F. Maier group of companies – one of the German pioneers in the processing of fiber composites – we at SCA can draw on extensive expertise in material processing and our own production capacities at international locations. This puts us in a position not only to develop new technologies, but also to bring them into series production.” SCA’s long-term goal is to gradually establish the innovations across the entire product range. The advantages for customers – such as lower weight, increased suitability for everyday use and an improved carbon footprint – are clear. At the same time, SCA is strengthening its position as a technologically leading supplier of pop-up roofs. SCA plans to present all four developments to the public for the first time at the CMT in Stuttgart in January 2026. The company is already inviting interested customers, expansion partners, OEMs and media representatives to join the dialog at info@sca-mobil.de.
