TEC BAR: Revolutionary fiber composite technology for sustainable concrete reinforcement

Innovative high-performance reinforcement reduces CO₂ footprint and extends the service life of buildings

Current challenges in the construction industry

The construction industry is at a turning point. The pressure to build more sustainably is constantly growing – fueled by stricter legal requirements, social expectations and advancing climate change. At the same time, the situation on the raw materials market continues to worsen: resources such as sand, gravel and steel have not only become more expensive, but also more difficult to obtain. Added to this is the challenge of constructing buildings and infrastructure that will last for generations while remaining flexible, energy-efficient and recyclable. Against this backdrop, innovations are needed that are not only economically viable, but also ecologically and socially sustainable.

With the TEC BAR, CG TEC Carbon und Glaserfasertechnik GmbH presents a pioneering solution that specifically addresses these challenges.

TEC BAR: New highlight in the product portfolio thanks to technological breakthrough

A new highlight in the product portfolio of CG TEC, the technology leader based in Spalt near Nuremberg, is the TEC BAR: an innovative reinforcing bar made of high-performance fibers for use in concrete.

The development of the TEC BAR required innovative solutions for optimal force transmission between fibers and concrete. As the TEC BAR cannot be bent like steel, CG TEC has developed special joining techniques that enable flexible applications, while comprehensive testing procedures guarantee long-term stability under a wide range of environmental conditions.

The technical properties are impressive: at only a quarter of the weight of steel, TEC BAR offers extremely high tensile strength. The corrosion resistance to chemicals, salt water and alkaline environments enables a significantly longer service life for the structures – over 100 years is realistic.

A decisive advantage also lies in sustainability: by eliminating the minimum cover required for steel reinforcement, up to 80% of concrete can be saved. This leads to slimmer constructions and a significantly improved carbon footprint. In addition, the TEC BAR made of glass and basalt fibers is electrically non-conductive, which makes it ideal for applications where stray current corrosion must be avoided.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Extremely high corrosion resistance to chemicals, salt water and environmental influences
  • Significantly lower weight compared to conventional steel reinforcements
  • Low CO2 footprint due to the positive overall balance
  • Very high tensile strength and durability for a long service life
  • Ideal for large-volume construction projects

Regulatory breakthrough paves the way for many applications

With the introduction of the first generally applicable guideline for non-metallic reinforcement by the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb) in January 2024, this technology has officially found its way into construction practice. This removes bureaucratic hurdles and establishes binding standards for planning and execution.

The TEC BAR is ideal for:

  • New construction of thin-walled concrete components (bridges, parking garages)
  • Precast concrete parts with high corrosion resistance requirements
  • Buildings in aggressive environments (port buildings, chemical plants)
  • Applications requiring electrical insulation
  • Repair and reinforcement of existing reinforced concrete structures

Tried and tested success story at Köhler Beton

With Klaus Köhler Beton- und Fertigteilwerk GmbH, CG TEC has gained another important customer for the large-volume use of the TEC BAR. Köhler Beton is already successfully using TEC BAR in the production of cable duct covers for concrete cable ducts for Deutsche Bahn AG. Extensive tests and developments were carried out to ensure the durability and performance of the TEC BAR for this specific application. The additional advantages in terms of handling and carbon footprint have proven to be significant in practice.

Future prospects

With the increasing acceptance of non-metallic reinforcements in the construction industry and the clear regulatory framework provided by the DAfStb guideline, CG TEC is positioning itself as a pioneer of sustainable transformation in the construction industry. The TEC BAR is not just a product, but part of a comprehensive solution for the challenges of modern construction – from material development and application consulting to continuous further development for specific application scenarios.

The combination of technical innovation, ecological benefits and economic efficiency makes the TEC BAR a forward-looking alternative for modern construction projects that focus on sustainability and durability.
