Fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) have been used successfully in pipe, tank, and plant construction since the 1950s and have established themselves as durable materials in demanding environments. Typical applications include piping systems, storage tanks, vessels, equipment, and components for the chemical, water, energy, and environmental engineering sectors. Thanks in part to their high corrosion resistance, low weight, and excellent mechanical properties, FRP solutions often offer a cost-effective and low-maintenance alternative to other materials. They are particularly impressive for their reliability and sustainability when used with aggressive media and over long service lives.
Our working group includes numerous key stakeholders from across the entire value chain. Together, we discuss technological issues, establish standards, and engage in dialogue with standards-setting and legislative bodies. In addition, marketing is a key focus of our collaboration, aimed at raising awareness of GRP solutions in the market. To this end, for example, press releases are planned and drafted collaboratively.
The AVK Working Group on “FRP in Pipe, Tank, and Plant Construction” has decided to adopt the current public draft of the EN 13121-3-2016-10 standard (as of October 2016). The working group recommends that users of this standard also use this draft version. The working group believes that the status of EN 13121-3-2016-10 reflects the current state of knowledge.
CALCULATION/DESIGN
GRP tanks are often an excellent choice. There can be uncertainty, especially with regard to the appropriate selection of materials and dimensioning as well as the correct information on the type plate to be attached. The working group has developed a corresponding Paper with notes on dimensioning and material selection of GRP containers – Specially created for the topic of temperature.
