Company description:

The need to protect the climate and the increasing scarcity of resources require the provision of new technologies for the efficient use of raw materials and energy. The cross-industry research and development work at the Institute of Lightweight Structures (IST) therefore focuses on lightweight structures with high performance and functional density as well as the associated production processes. In accordance with the Chemnitz model of bivalent resource efficiency (BRE strategy), the aim is to achieve high material and energy efficiency both in the holistic value chains and in the use of parts and components. The unique selling point here are near-series processes for the production of contour-appropriate, load-adapted fiber composite and hybrid structures. The IST is currently coordinating the only federal cluster of excellence in the field of lightweight construction research. The director of the institute, Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Prof. h. c. Dr. h. c. Prof. L. Kroll heads the affiliated institute CETEX and the Plastics Center Oberlausitz at the Fraunhofer IWU.
