Company description:

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS in Halle (Saale) offers microstructure-based diagnostics and technology development for innovative materials, components and systems.

We deal with issues relating to plastics processing and the optimization of polymer materials. The aim of the work is to improve energy and resource efficiency when using the materials and processes we have developed on an industrial scale. This benefits customers in the automotive, aircraft and rail vehicle mobility sectors as well as companies in the plastics and mechanical engineering industries.

We supply solutions for thermoplastic-based lightweight construction, tire applications and the use of bio-based plastics in large-scale production, for example. We consider the entire value chain, from the microstructure of the material to the customized component. We develop on a small scale and, at the Fraunhofer Pilot Plant Center for Polymer Synthesis and Processing (PAZ) and elsewhere, have facilities up to industrial scale and can carry out prototype sampling.

Our know-how includes:

  • Selection of raw materials
  • Microstructure design
  • Processing technology
  • Characterization of material properties
  • Analysis of component properties incl. Prediction of usage behavior
  • Modeling and simulation
  • Process development
