Company description:

The Institute of Polymer Materials and Polymer Technology was founded in 1998 with the appointment of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ziegmann has been a senior professor since 01.07.2018. The institute is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing.

The Institute’s team currently has a total of 36 employees, 28 of whom work in science and 8 in technical and administrative areas. Thematically, we work on five key areas that include elements of both plastics processing and polymer materials in order to arrive at new solutions.

  • Fiber composites form the primary research area with a thematic focus on the implementation and simulation of RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) and VARI (Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion) processes.
  • The second area is flow processes, in which processes and problems of plastics processing such as micro injection molding, compounding and the processing of highly filled plastic systems are dealt with.
  • The third area comprises the modification, characterization and processing of natural fibres into natural fibre-reinforced plastics (NFRP). Dr. Steuernagel and his team have been working successfully in this field since 2006.
  • The fourth area is additive manufacturing, in which we are opening up new areas of research in the fields of thermoplastic and thermoset plastic systems, as well as ceramic materials in the future.
  • Furthermore, the system recycling of plastics is a forward-looking area of expertise at our institute that is to be expanded.

In addition to intensive basic research, which is often funded by projects of the DFG (German Research Foundation), DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation), AiF (German Federation of Industrial Research Associations) and in EU projects, we are constantly establishing and expanding contacts with industry. Cooperation takes place both on the basis of small orders and cooperation agreements. This close collaboration drives the transfer of technology and science to industry, enabling us to use our expertise to offer innovations and optimizations for new and established processes. Our branch office in Stade also works successfully with many other companies in CFK Valley, including Airbus.
