Company description:
Neue Materialien Bayreuth GmbH (NMB) is a non-university research institution that develops innovative material variants and the associated processing methods in the field of lightweight construction for plastics, fiber-reinforced composites and metals. We also create application-oriented solutions to optimize existing materials and production processes for specific applications.
We also offer a comprehensive range of services for materials analysis and component testing using the latest methods and laboratory technology.
In addition to R&D work for industrial companies in direct cooperation or as part of publicly funded joint projects, we also undertake contract manufacturing for prototypes and small series as well as tool sampling.
The main areas of work for plastics are foamed and fiber-reinforced thermoplastics as well as high-performance composites. The special feature of NMB is our ultra-modern production facilities on an industrial scale. They create the basis for the new solutions to be used directly in industrial practice. If required, we can cover the entire process chain in our investigations.
Special areas of work include special injection molding processes, particle foams, as well as short, long and continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites.
The “Injection Moulding and Fiber Composites” group develops innovative lightweight solutions for fiber-reinforced and foamed thermoplastics in large quantities. State-of-the-art pilot plant equipment on an industrial scale is available for this purpose. In addition to classic injection molding and organic sheet processes, new innovative materials and manufacturing processes are constantly being developed. The focus is on short, long and continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, special injection molding processes, sandwich and hybrid processes.
The heart of the group is a highly modern and automated plant with eight injection molding machines and presses from 50 t to 2,500 t clamping force in horizontal and vertical clamping units, as well as a UD tape multiaxial laying system incl. Double belt press. In the fiber composite sector, the complete process chain from the UD tape to the finished component from a 2,500 t injection press can thus be covered. All systems are state-of-the-art and are constantly being further developed and optimized in cooperation with the system manufacturers. For customers and project partners, expertise is available along the entire process chain from material development, tool design and production, simulation, compounding, mechanical testing to thermal analysis. These comprehensive options, combined with years of experience in the field of fiber-reinforced and foamed polymers, open up unique possibilities from the molecule to the ready-to-install prototype from a single source. Our customers include material suppliers, machine manufacturers, suppliers and OEMs, primarily from the automotive and aviation sectors. There are currently plans to develop additive manufacturing with plastics as a supplementary process.
Group Manager “Injection Moulding and Fiber Composites” is Dipl.-Ing. Mathias Mühlbacher. Managing Director of the company is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Altstädt. He also holds the Chair of Polymer Materials at the University of Bayreuth.
